Tips for Improving Skin Texture

As I wrote in Beating Sugar Addiction For Dummies, sugar is damaging to ALL your body’s tissues, including your skin. Sugar causes wrinkles by damaging your skin’s elasticity, and by producing damaging proteins.

Everyone wants to maintain smooth and young-looking skin, which is why there are a plethora of skin products available in the market promising to provide excellent results. However, not all of them live up to their promise. Moreover, different types of skin may require specific care. There are various causes of these skin problems, including poor lifestyle, genes, environment, and age. Therefore, we listed some tips to improve your skin texture and make it smooth, brilliant, and younger-looking.

1. Adopt a healthier lifestyle

One factor contributing to skin problems, including premature aging, is poor lifestyle habits. Improving your lifestyle with some healthier upgrades will also help improve your skin! 

  • Eating nutritious foods will provide the needed nutrients to your body. There are specific foods that are good for the skin, such as fish, berries, and vegetables. Furthermore, drinking plenty of water will also keep you hydrated, which helps make your skin glow. 
  • In addition, exercise improves the flow of oxygen in the body, releases skin toxins, and clears pores. 
  • Ensure you get enough sleep, since your body repairs itself during that time. 
  • Finally, stay away from unhealthy foods, like those that are processed, fried, or high in sugar. 

2. Use the right moisturizer

Moisturizer is not just for those with dry skin but also for those with oily skin. It helps hydrate the skin and prevent dry and flaky spots. Check the information of the moisturizing product that you will choose, and make sure that it’s made for your skin type. For example, moisturizers for oily types are more breathable, thus leaving the skin shine-free and non-sticky while ensuring smoothness. Paula Hawley’s Ageless Skin book gives some great suggestions.

3. Get skin treatments

There are various skin treatments available to treat your specific skin concern. Deal only with a professional skincare specialist to ensure safe and effective procedures like SmoothGlo treatments. They combine intense pulsed light or IPL therapy and microneedling in one session. You get one treatment after the other, thus maximizing results while minimizing downtime. The IPL improves the skin tone by eliminating red and brown lesions while hydrating the skin. Microneedling then makes the volume and texture of the skin better. You will see the full outcome after about 3 or 4 sessions. 

4. Exfoliate your skin

Skin exfoliation removes dead skin, which results in a smoother layer. Cleanse the skin thoroughly while still being gentle. Choose a cleansing product designed for your skin type that will effectively remove unwanted dirt without being harsh. Use peels or scrubs to exfoliate the skin and expose the fresher layer. Some exfoliants are not only for the face but also for other parts of the body, like the hands and feet. 

5. Protect your skin from the sun

The sun’s UV is one of the leading causes of skin damage. Protect your skin from sun damage by applying sunscreen regularly, even when the sun is not out. UV rays still penetrate the clouds, so be sure you are protected. Wear shades and long sleeves and stay under the shade as much as possible to prevent sun exposure. And use environmentally-friendly sunscreens to avoid damaging aquatic wildlife and killing the coral reefs!
